Born in Bath, and raised in Surrey, Nick attended Guildford Royal Grammar School before embarking on a career in marketing working for the eclectic mix of Courtaulds, Haig Whisky, the Financial Times and the New Zealand High Commission.
A chance encounter, Nick met Jan, a Queenslander, and after a brief courtship they married in the UK in 1973. After some six years in the UK, Nick and Jan immigrated to Brisbane in July 1979. Their only child, Alexis was born in Brisbane December, that same year. They initially settled in Camira. During 1987, the family moved to Westlake.
It was during this year that Nick joined Rotary, as the charter secretary of the Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary. The Club was chartered in Toowoomba by the then RI President, Charles C Keller, in December 1987. Nick has held numerous positions within the club including President, Secretary, Treasurer, and director of most committees. Nick has maintained 100% attendance for all but one of the 20 years of the club’s existence.
At district level, Nick has been involved in some way or another for practically his entire Rotary career; having served upon the committees for Rotary Foundation, Youth Exchange, RYLA and has served as District Chairman of the Public Relations Committee. In addition, Nick has served as District Treasurer for two terms of three years each.
Last year, Nick was both DGN and an assistant governor working with the Group 6 clubs.
Nick joined the Australian Taxation Office in 1980. Nick studied part-time at the University of Queensland, and was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce in June 1986. Nick subsequently took the CPA exams, becoming a Fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants. Nick is also a JP (Qual).
Nick was involved in many areas of taxation during his 27-year career with the ATO. Nick’s major role involved the implementation of GST and, when he retired in July 2006, he was a Principle Officer working on GST policy issues including public rulings.
Currently, Nick, although supposedly retired, is serving as the part-time tax manager for the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries.
Jan and Nick now reside in the oldest of Brisbane’s historic woolstores in Teneriffe. Nick commutes each week to his beloved Rotary club. Nick has been honoured by his club in 1997 with a Paul Harris Fellow and has been awarded ‘clubman of the year’. In 2005, Nick was awarded an Australia Day Achievement Medallion in recognition for outstanding service to the Tax Office Community. Nick’s main interest outside Rotary is his weekly game of bridge.
